Tears glistened on the black and purple bruises covering 91-year-old Rodolfo Rodriguez's face as he described being attacked by a group of people while going for a walk on the Fourth of July. "I can't walk anymore," Rodriguez said in Spanish. "I'm in so much pain." He'll be turning 92 in September, Rodriguez said, and he's never been hurt like this before, in a life working the fields with cattle and corn. He had traveled from Michoacan, Mexico, to visit his family in Willowbrook, California, a city in Los Angeles County, his grandson Erik Mendoza said. He makes the trip about twice a year, and takes a walk through the neighborhood every day after lunch, Mendoza said. "Everyone in the neighborhood knows him already," he said. Rodriguez said he was walking to a nearby park on Wednesday when he passed a woman and a little girl. UK watchdog intends to fine Facebook £500,000 for breaching Data Protection Act

Britain’s data watchdog intends to fine Facebook £500,000 for breaches of the Data Protection Act. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said the social media giant broke the law by failing to safeguard people’s information and failing to be transparent about how people’s data was harvested by others. The ICO also announced it proposes to bring criminal action against SCL Elections, the parent company of Cambridge Analytica (CA). Despite the proposed fine being a record for the watchdog, campaigners said it was “unacceptable”, as under new data laws the penalty could have totalled hundreds of millions of pounds. Facebook, with CA, has been the focus of the ICO’s investigation since February when evidence emerged that an app had been used to harvest the data of 50 million Facebook users around the world. The total is now estimated at 87 million, the ICO said. In March 2017, the ICO began looking into whether personal data had been misused by campaigns on both sides of...

Flying Trains Could Be Coming Your Way

Image
It sounds like something Q, the tech guy in James Bond movies, would create: A plane that lands on a runway, shrugs its wings off, turns into a train and rolls on to rails to drop you off at your local station. That’s what a French entrepreneur, who’s made millions by connecting engineers with industrial groups, is pitching to Boeing Co. and others. "Link & Fly" is Akka Technologies’s new flagship aircraft design, with wings that come off to hasten turnover at airports and make boarding easier and closer to passengers’ homes. Maurice Ricci Source: Akka Technologies “After cars go electric and autonomous, the next big disruption will be in airplanes,” Akka’s Chief Executive Officer Maurice Ricci said in an interview in Paris. Boeing is among prime customer targets for Akka, as it seeks to limit its dependence on the likes of  Airbus SE  and  Renault SA  in Europe. With Akka’s futuristic concept, passengers would board a train-like tube...
